TalkTalk Down? TalkTalk Network Status in Real Time

Status computed from public network signals (BGP and active probes) on TalkTalk's infrastructure, updated every ~10 minutes. This is not an official TalkTalk channel.

Is TalkTalk down right now? A red badge below points to trouble on the network TalkTalk rents; a green one while your own connection is dead usually means the fault is closer to home — your kit or your Openreach line. The one-minute check: glance at the live badge, weigh it against other people's reports on Downdetector, then run a speed test on your phone over mobile data with Wi-Fi off.

The chart shows the network signal level (BGP reachability and active probes) relative to the median of the last 24 hours: full bars = normal, low bars = possible outage.

What to do if TalkTalk is down

TalkTalk built its name on value plans, and like most budget ISPs it rents its lines rather than owning them: broadband comes over Openreach, with a big share of the base still on FTTC part-fibre and full-fibre FTTP arriving area by area, all fed through TalkTalk's own routing and DNS. So the wire into your home is shared with other Openreach ISPs, while the service riding over it is TalkTalk's.

When the badge above flags a network-wide fault there's little to do but wait — an exchange problem or a stumble in TalkTalk's core gets fixed centrally, so tether to your phone for anything that can't wait. When the badge is green, the fault is probably yours to chase:

Why TalkTalk goes down: typical causes

Two very different things get called a "TalkTalk outage". The first lives in the Openreach network TalkTalk rents: a knocked cabinet, an exchange being worked on, or a contractor putting a spade through a duct will pull every Openreach customer in that pocket offline at once, TalkTalk included. The second lives in TalkTalk's own platform — the routing and DNS that turn a working line into working web pages. The provider has seen nationwide episodes where lines stayed perfectly in sync yet browsing stalled, which is exactly how a DNS or routing fault behaves.

A third pattern isn't an outage at all. On FTTC, the copper hop between your home and the cabinet decides how fast and how steadily the line can train; a long or electrically noisy run leaves you with a lower, wobblier sync. That's a line-quality matter Openreach can occasionally tidy up, not a network that has fallen over.

Is it me or TalkTalk?

The fastest way to separate the two is a side-by-side test. Put your phone on 4G/5G with Wi-Fi switched off and run a speed test, then cable a laptop to the Wi-Fi Hub and repeat it. A phone that works while the wired test flatlines places the fault on your TalkTalk line or its network; a healthy wired result sitting next to feeble Wi-Fi points squarely at your home wireless. Since the line is Openreach, a neighbour on any Openreach provider is a handy control — if they're down too, the shared network is the culprit.

There's a gap between a line that has stopped and one that is simply underperforming. A wired figure that lands well short of your package every time is a complaint to log, not an outage to sit out — and rule out a units muddle first, because a 944 Mbps Full Fibre package tops out near 118 MB/s once bits are converted to bytes. Our UK ISP speed test guide shows how to build a case from repeated readings.

How to contact TalkTalk and check the official status

You can reach TalkTalk on 0345 172 0088, and the My TalkTalk app flags known faults against your line and lets you raise a report without queueing. When you need to know whether a problem reaches past your own walls, line up two sources that don't rely on each other: the crowd-sourced reports on Downdetector and the live badge above. During a genuine incident, a glance at "TalkTalk down" on social media tends to reveal within a minute or two whether the country is affected or only your postcode.

FAQ

How do I know if TalkTalk is down right now?

The live badge near the top reads public network signals across TalkTalk's ranges and updates about every ten minutes. A red badge suggests a fault across the network; a green badge while your own connection is dead usually means the trouble sits inside your home or on your Openreach line. Treat it as one input, alongside Downdetector reports and a quick speed test on mobile data.

My TalkTalk broadband light is flashing — what does that mean?

On a part-fibre FTTC connection the Wi-Fi Hub's broadband light holds steady after it trains the line to the cabinet; a lamp stuck flashing hasn't achieved sync. Full-fibre FTTP feeds light to a separate Openreach ONT — an off or red optical/LOS lamp there means the fibre signal isn't arriving, an exchange or street fault rather than anything in your router.

Does TalkTalk use the Openreach network?

Yes. TalkTalk owns no access network of its own: broadband arrives over Openreach — chiefly FTTC, with full-fibre FTTP where it has been built — and TalkTalk adds its routing and DNS on top. A shared Openreach fault therefore drags TalkTalk down beside other providers, whereas a fault in TalkTalk's own platform is felt by TalkTalk customers alone.

My line is synced but I can't browse — is that TalkTalk?

Most likely. A steady broadband light with dead web pages tells you the copper or fibre is fine and the problem is upstream in TalkTalk's DNS or routing. Confirm it by opening a site via its raw IP address, or by pointing one device at a public DNS resolver — if either works, the platform is at fault rather than your connection.

TalkTalk is slow but not fully down — what should I do?

Compare a test cabled to the Wi-Fi Hub against one over Wi-Fi. A solid wired number blames your wireless; a wired number far under your package is a provisioning or line-quality issue, not an outage. FTTC lines in particular are capped by the length of the copper to the cabinet. And note the arithmetic: 944 Mbps works out to roughly 118 MB/s in a download manager.

How long do TalkTalk outages last and can I claim compensation?

Network-wide faults tend to be measured in hours; a broken cabinet or severed duct waits on an Openreach engineer and can drag on. As a signatory to Ofcom's automatic compensation scheme, TalkTalk owes eligible customers a set daily sum once a total loss of service passes two working days unrepaired, so log when it began and any reference number.
