About us

RealMbps: actually measuring your connection

RealMbps is an independent speed test built to deliver real numbers, not the ones your provider would like you to see. No tricks, no "friendly" servers, no invasive data collection: just an accurate measurement of what actually reaches your device.

Our mission

The "typical" speed test measures against servers strategically placed inside providers' networks — the result: flattering numbers that rarely reflect reality. We believe every user deserves an honest measurement: against neutral global infrastructure (Cloudflare), with a transparent protocol, and with results you can actually interpret.

We also believe that understanding your own connection matters: that's why we built a section of in-depth guides on Wi-Fi 6, the Mbps/MB relationship, bandwidth requirements for Netflix 4K, and how to file complaints with your operator when things go wrong. All in 5 languages, all free, all readable in a few minutes.

What makes us different

How the project is funded

RealMbps is free for everyone. To cover the cost of hosting (Vercel), database (Upstash Redis for the leaderboard) and domain, we monetise via non-intrusive Google AdSense advertising and, where relevant, Amazon affiliate links (labelled explicitly as required by the Associates programme).

Editorial choices — for example which routers we recommend in our guides — are based on technical criteria and independent research, not on commission margins. When a product doesn't convince us, we say so.

The team

RealMbps is a project developed and maintained in-house. The guides are written by people with experience in networking, web development and telecommunications. Content is updated regularly to reflect the evolution of technology (FTTH XGS-PON, Wi-Fi 6E, DOCSIS 4.0) and market offerings.

We publish all relevant information on data collection and cookie use in our privacy policy. The technical methodology of the test is documented on the methodology page. For any question, reach out directly through this page.
