How to Speed Up Your Internet Connection (2026)
Most "slow internet" is not the line you pay for. It's Wi-Fi, an old router, or a tired ISP box. Here are 12 fixes that actually move the needle, in the order you should try them, plus the myths that waste your money.

1. Diagnose first: test before you touch anything
Before changing a single setting, measure. Run a speed test and write down three numbers: download, upload and ping. Then compare them to the plan you actually pay for. This one step tells you which half of the problem you have.
- Test wired if you can. Plug a laptop straight into the router with an Ethernet cable. If the wired result matches your plan but Wi-Fi is slow, the line is fine and the problem is inside your home.
- Test at different times. Run one test at 3 pm and another at 9 pm. A big evening drop points at your ISP, not your gear.
- Test close to the router, then far away. If speed collapses room to room, it's a Wi-Fi coverage problem, not a bandwidth problem.
Golden rule: if a wired test hits the speed you pay for, no amount of router tweaking will make Wi-Fi faster than the line. You're now optimising coverage, not raw bandwidth.
2. Fix your Wi-Fi (the usual culprit)
Wi-Fi is where most speed disappears. Four things matter, in order of impact:
- Placement. The router belongs out in the open, central, and raised off the floor, not in a cupboard, behind the TV, or next to the microwave. Every wall, floor and metal object costs you signal. A router in a hallway beats a router boxed into a corner every time.
- Band choice. The 2.4 GHz band reaches further but is slow and crowded. The 5 GHz band is much faster over shorter distances. The new 6 GHz band (Wi-Fi 6E and 7) is nearly empty and very fast, but short range. Rule: 5/6 GHz for anything near the router, 2.4 GHz only for far-away or low-demand devices.
- Channel. On 2.4 GHz, only channels 1, 6 and 11 don't overlap. If a dozen neighbours all sit on the same channel, everyone slows down. Most modern routers auto-select; if yours is stuck on a busy channel, set it manually.
- Hardware generation. Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) and 6E handle many devices far better than Wi-Fi 5. If your router is more than five years old, this alone can double real-world throughput in a busy home.
Also kill obvious interference: cordless phones, baby monitors, cheap USB 3.0 hubs and microwaves all sit near 2.4 GHz. Move the router away from them.
3. Ethernet vs Wi-Fi: when the cable wins
Wi-Fi is convenient; Ethernet is faster, lower-latency and rock stable. A cable never suffers from walls, interference or crowded channels. For anything that stays put and needs performance, wire it:
- Gaming console or gaming PC — lower ping, zero jitter, no random spikes mid-match.
- Work-from-home desktop — reliable video calls without freezes.
- Smart TV or streaming box — steady 4K with no buffering.
Use a Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable; both handle gigabit easily, so don't overpay for exotic cables. If the room is far from the router, a mesh node or a single well-placed access point beats stretching Wi-Fi to its limit.
4. Router: reboot, firmware, QoS, replace
The router is the brain of your network, and it's often the weak link, especially the free box the ISP shipped.
- Reboot it. Unplug for 30 seconds, plug back in. Boring, but it clears memory leaks and re-establishes a clean line sync. Do it before anything else.
- Update the firmware. Old firmware carries bugs and worse Wi-Fi performance. Check the admin page or app; many routers now update automatically.
- Enable QoS. Quality of Service lets you prioritise real-time traffic (video calls, gaming) over background downloads, so one big update doesn't kill everyone's Zoom.

Tip: if you replace the ISP box, put the old one in "bridge" or "modem-only" mode so you don't run two routers fighting each other (double NAT), which quietly hurts gaming and some apps.
5. DNS: what changing it does and doesn't do
DNS is the phone book of the internet: it turns a name like example.com into an IP address. Switching to a fast public DNS such as Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8) can make pages start loading a little quicker, because the lookup happens faster than with some slow ISP resolvers.
- What it does: snappier response when you first open a site, sometimes better privacy, and a fix for occasional "can't find server" errors.
- What it does not do: it does not increase your bandwidth. Your download and upload speeds stay exactly the same. Anyone promising "faster internet by changing DNS" as a speed boost is overselling it.
Set it in your router (so every device benefits) or per-device in the network settings. It's free, safe and reversible, worth doing, just for the right reasons.
6. Your devices: adapters, drivers, background apps
Sometimes the slow thing is the device, not the network. If one laptop is slow while everything else is fine, look here:
- Old Wi-Fi adapters. A laptop with a Wi-Fi 4/5 card can't use a fast Wi-Fi 6 network fully. A cheap USB Wi-Fi 6 adapter can fix an old machine.
- Outdated drivers. Update network drivers on Windows; they genuinely affect throughput and stability.
- Background hogs. Cloud backups, OS updates, game launchers pre-loading patches and torrent clients quietly eat your bandwidth. Pause them, or schedule them overnight.
- Too many tabs and extensions. A struggling browser can feel like slow internet when it's really slow rendering. Test in a fresh window.
7. Powerline, mesh and extenders
When one router can't cover the whole home, you have three options, each with trade-offs:
- Mesh systems — several units that form one seamless network. Best coverage and the smart choice for larger or multi-floor homes. Costs more, but it just works.
- Powerline adapters — send data over your electrical wiring to a distant room. Handy when you can't run a cable, but speed depends heavily on the age and quality of the wiring, and they hate being plugged into extension strips.
- Wi-Fi extenders/repeaters — cheapest, but they typically halve throughput and create a second network name. Fine for a phone in a dead corner; poor for a work PC or 4K TV.
Order of preference: Ethernet > mesh (wired backhaul) > mesh (wireless) > powerline > extender. Reach for an extender only when nothing else is possible.
8. The ISP side: congestion, throttling, upgrades
If a wired test underdelivers, especially at night, the problem is upstream and no home tweak will fix it.
- Evening congestion. Speeds that are fine at noon but crawl at 9 pm usually mean an oversubscribed local network. Log the times and results; that evidence matters when you complain.
- Throttling. Some plans slow specific traffic (video, torrents) after a data cap. If only certain services are slow while speed tests look fine, throttling is likely.
- Underdelivered line. If you pay for 500 Mbps and consistently get 200 wired, that's the ISP's problem. Many countries require providers to deliver a minimum advertised speed; a documented log of wired tests is your leverage for a fix, a discount, or a free exit.
- Upgrade the plan (only if it's the real limit). If your wired speed already matches your plan and it's genuinely not enough for the household, then, and only then, does paying for a faster tier help.

10. What does not work (the myths)
Save your money and your time. These do nothing for real speed:
- "Internet accelerator" apps. They can't add bandwidth your line doesn't have. At best they clear a cache; at worst they bundle adware.
- Registry "tweak" tools and TCP optimisers. Modern operating systems already auto-tune. These rarely help and can break things.
- Signal-boosting stickers and paint. Pure snake oil.
- Buying gigabit "for gaming". Online games need tiny bandwidth and low ping, not huge speed. Fix latency, not the number on the box.
- Expensive HDMI-grade Ethernet cables. A basic Cat 6 cable already carries gigabit. Premium cables change nothing.

Why is my internet so slow all of a sudden?
