1. Diagnose first: test before you touch anything

Before changing a single setting, measure. Run a speed test and write down three numbers: download, upload and ping. Then compare them to the plan you actually pay for. This one step tells you which half of the problem you have.

Golden rule: if a wired test hits the speed you pay for, no amount of router tweaking will make Wi-Fi faster than the line. You're now optimising coverage, not raw bandwidth.

2. Fix your Wi-Fi (the usual culprit)

Wi-Fi is where most speed disappears. Four things matter, in order of impact:

DNS is the phone book of the internet: it turns a name like example.com into an IP address. Switching to a fast public DNS such as Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8) can make pages start loading a little quicker, because the lookup happens faster than with some slow ISP resolvers.

Set it in your router (so every device benefits) or per-device in the network settings. It's free, safe and reversible, worth doing, just for the right reasons.

Why is my internet so slow all of a sudden?

Run a wired speed test. If it matches your plan, the drop is Wi-Fi or a device; reboot the router and check for background downloads. If the wired test is also slow, especially at night, it's likely ISP congestion or a line fault, contact your provider.

Does changing DNS to 1.1.1.1 make internet faster?

It can make websites start loading slightly quicker and improve reliability, but it does not raise your download or upload bandwidth. It's a worthwhile, free tweak, just not a speed boost.

Is Ethernet really faster than Wi-Fi?

For stability and latency, yes, clearly. A cable avoids walls, interference and crowded channels. Wire anything that stays put and needs performance, like a console, TV or work PC.

Will a Wi-Fi 6 router speed up my internet?
