Data and sources

Every number on this site comes from somewhere. This page lists the sources one by one, with what each can tell you and what it cannot.

The speed test

The measurement runs in your browser against Cloudflare's public infrastructure, spread across hundreds of cities. We don't use servers hosted by the operators: a server inside your provider's network returns prettier numbers that are less representative of what you actually do online. Operator network status

The green/amber/red indicators on the outage pages come from IODA (Internet Outage Detection and Analysis), a public project run by Georgia Tech that detects reachability anomalies at network (ASN) level. It refreshes roughly every ten minutes.

What it can tell you: whether an operator's network has a broad problem. What it cannot: whether your individual line works. It is not an official operator channel and we don't present it as one.

Matching IP address to operator

To work out which operator you are on we query RIPEstat, the RIPE NCC public data service, which maps an address to the autonomous system (ASN) announcing it. The IP address is never stored: we keep only the derived operator, and the cache is keyed on a cryptographic fingerprint of the prefix, not the address.

The community leaderboard

Results shown on the leaderboard are submitted by users who choose to publish them under a nickname. They are self-reported and unverified: the test runs in the visitor's own browser, so we cannot certify the conditions. There are checks against impossible values and repeated submissions, but the leaderboard is a game, not market research.

What we don't collect

• We don't store results you don't choose to publish.
• We don't store IP addresses.
• We don't sell data to third parties.
