RealMbps is not a newsroom and not a company: it is one person's project. This page says who writes it, with what background, and with what limits — because knowing who is on the other side should come first, not last.

About me

For over twenty years I have managed products and businesses for a US multinational, with EMEA responsibility. My job has always been to understand what a product actually does for the person paying for it, and whether the promise on the box matches what shows up at home.

Along the way I got curious about building things myself. Not as a developer — I'm not one — but with the digital tools that finally let one person design, automate and ship a working product without a team behind them. RealMbps came out of that curiosity.

I say it plainly because it matters when you read these pages: I am not a network engineer. What you find here is the work of someone who can read a specification, measure methodically and explain it in plain language — not the opinion of a telecoms specialist.

Why RealMbps

I pay for a gigabit line and I had no real way of knowing whether I was getting it. Most speed tests are run by the same companies that sell you the connection, and none of them tell you the part that matters: whether the problem is the line, the Wi-Fi, or the device in your hand.

I wanted a measurement that isn't anyone's marketing asset, and a plain explanation of what the numbers mean.

What RealMbps is

A free speed test that runs in your browser — ping, jitter, download, upload — with no account and nothing stored about you. Around it, guides that explain how to read your result, what your contract actually entitles you to in your country, and what to change when the number is lower than it should be.

Measure, understand, improve.

How I work

• What I measure: ping, jitter, download and upload against Cloudflare's public infrastructure, straight from the browser. The full protocol is written out on the methodology page.
• What I don't measure: how your line behaves in the hours you are not testing, the coverage on your street, or what the operator's network does beyond your own connection. A test is a snapshot, not monitoring.
• What I don't do: I don't test products in a lab, and I don't pretend that I have. How I choose them is written in how we pick products.
• Where I'm wrong: if you find a mistake, write to me. I correct it, and every page carries its update date.

The site pays for itself with advertising and a few affiliate links, explained in full in the affiliate disclosure. The sources behind the data I publish are listed in data and sources.
