Optimal setup: nodes, backhaul, channels

Even the best mesh, set up poorly, covers like a cheap extender. Five steps worth more than any hardware upgrade:

  1. Place the main node in the center, not in the corner where the fiber arrives. If needed, run a cable to bring the ONT/modem toward the middle of the home.
  2. Get node spacing right: not too far (backhaul signal degrades) nor too close (wasted coverage). Golden rule: each node should "see" the previous one with at least 2 of 3 bars.
  3. Use Ethernet backhaul if you can: wiring the nodes with a network cable is the single most effective improvement. Where cable can't reach, a powerline adapter is a good fallback.
  4. Nodes high and out in the open: never inside a cabinet, behind the TV or in a closet. Metal and load-bearing walls are the signal's worst enemies.
  5. One SSID: let the mesh handle switching between bands and nodes. Don't split 2.4/5 GHz networks unless you have finicky IoT devices.

Verify the real gain. After installing the mesh, re-run the tests on RealMbps at the same spots as before: near the main node, in the problem room, and over Ethernet. If the far room doesn't at least double, try moving the node or switching to wired backhaul.
