Mesh, router or extender: what to choose
Before spending, get clear on which problem you're solving. Three very different solutions get confused all the time:
- Single router: one device broadcasting from one point. Perfect for apartments up to 800-950 sqft on one floor. Maximum speed within range, but coverage collapses beyond two load-bearing walls.
- Range extender: grabs the router's signal and rebroadcasts it. Cheap, but it almost always halves bandwidth, creates a second network with a different SSID, and forces your device to "reconnect" manually. It's a band-aid, not a cure.
- Mesh system: two or more identical nodes forming a single network with the same name. Your device roams from node to node without noticing (seamless roaming). It's the right fix for large, multi-floor homes or thick walls.
The practical difference between an extender and a mesh comes down to the backhaul (the link between nodes) and smart roaming: a quality mesh handles both automatically, an extender doesn't. That's why even a budget mesh beats any extender.

How to choose: the criteria that matter
1. Number of nodes vs. square footage

Optimal setup: nodes, backhaul, channels
Even the best mesh, set up poorly, covers like a cheap extender. Five steps worth more than any hardware upgrade:
- Place the main node in the center, not in the corner where the fiber arrives. If needed, run a cable to bring the ONT/modem toward the middle of the home.
- Get node spacing right: not too far (backhaul signal degrades) nor too close (wasted coverage). Golden rule: each node should "see" the previous one with at least 2 of 3 bars.
- Use Ethernet backhaul if you can: wiring the nodes with a network cable is the single most effective improvement. Where cable can't reach, a powerline adapter is a good fallback.
- Nodes high and out in the open: never inside a cabinet, behind the TV or in a closet. Metal and load-bearing walls are the signal's worst enemies.
