Why cable beats Wi-Fi

Today's Wi-Fi 6 is fast, but it shares a physical limit with all radio networks: it's a half-duplex, shared medium. Every wall, every neighbor on the same channel, every microwave that switches on adds interference and retransmissions. The result isn't so much a lower peak bandwidth as inconsistent behavior: the ping fluctuates, occasionally spikes, and under load latency explodes.

Shielding: U/UTP vs S/FTP

The code on the cable (e.g. U/UTP, F/UTP, S/FTP) describes the shielding. The first letter is the cable's overall shield, the one after the slash the individual pairs. Simplified:

The operational translation: at home, pick U/UTP and save. Move to shielded only if the cable runs alongside power wiring for meters, or if you see errors/slowdowns you suspect come from interference. A poorly grounded shielded cable offers no benefit — it can even behave worse than a good UTP.

When you need a switch

Home routers typically have 3-4 LAN ports. Does a Cat 8 cable make me faster than a Cat 6?

No, if your line is within 1 Gbps. A Cat 6 (or Cat 5e) already handles gigabit. A higher category only raises the theoretical maximum bandwidth; it doesn't speed up a connection that's already limited elsewhere.
